If you’re heading to the snow this winter—whether it’s Thredbo, Perisher, or some hidden off-piste spot—Canberra makes the perfect stopover. I stayed at Little Drifter Canberra, and it turned out to be exactly what I needed: cozy, stylish, and super convenient before the long drive to the mountains.
My Favourite Things to Do in Canberra
Canberra really surprised me. I thought it would just be a place to crash on the way to the slopes, but I ended up finding so much to do over the weekend. Here are my top ten:
- Australian War Memorial – a must-do historical landmark
- National Gallery of Australia – Perfect gallery to wander around for an hour or two.
- Lake Burley Griffin – I grabbed a coffee and just walked by the water, it was beautiful.
- National Museum of Australia – interactive, fun, and way more engaging than I expected.
- Mount Ainslie Lookout – the views over the whole city are incredible, especially at sunset.
- Craft breweries – I couldn’t resist trying a local pint or two.
- Old Bus Depot Markets (weekends) – loads of great food and local finds; I could’ve spent hours there.
- Australian National Botanic Gardens – a peaceful walk among native plants, the perfect reset or workout.
- NewActon street art – Super cute neighbourhood.
- Unwinding back at Little Drifter – after a long day of walking, it felt so good to relax here and watch a movie in the cinema room.
