Small black and tan spaniel sits on a wooden floor, looking up with its tongue out; a white sneaker is visible to the right.

Our pet-friendly accommodation in Christchurch sits in the central city, with a bar, a kitchen and a lounge downstairs. Only some of the private rooms take dogs, so let us know directly if you’re bringing along your four-legged friend. There is a $50 a night fee to cover additional allergen clean for future guests and best to speak with the team directly to ensure the room is suitable when booking.

Walk Your Dog in Nearby Hagley Park

Located a short 15-minute walk from Drifter Christchurch, Hagley Park offers the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll with your dog. Dogs are allowed off-leash in the park as long as they are under effective control and must be on a lead while on pathways. Please note that dogs are not permitted in the Botanic Gardens.

Christchurch City Council sets the rules for dogs in parks and publishes a map of the leashed, prohibited and off-leash areas across the city. Check the Council’s dog rules map before you head out.

Getting Around Christchurch With Your Dog

Small dogs can travel on Christchurch’s Metro buses for free. You’ll need a carrier that fits on your lap or under the seat (up to 58cm long), one pet per person, and you can only travel off-peak: weekdays from 9am to 3pm, after 6:30pm, and any time on weekends and public holidays. The Bus Interchange is a two-minute walk from our door, which makes getting around easy. Metro’s rules for travelling with pets have the full details.

Heading further around the South Island? Your dog crosses Cook Strait for free on the Interislander ferry, as long as they stay in your vehicle for the crossing. If you’re travelling without a car, you’ll need to book a kennel when you buy your ticket.

FAQ’s

Is there a fee for bringing pets?

Yes, there’s a $50 per night pet fee. It pays for the extra allergen clean the room gets after your stay, so factor it into the total on a longer booking. A $250 deep cleaning fee may also apply if the room needs more than a standard clean, along with the cost of any damage caused during the stay.

Do you provide pet bedding and bowls?

No. Bring your dog’s own bed, bowls and anything else they need for the stay. If you’d like a water bowl, the bar team can sort one, handy for when you’re down at The Rambler for a drink.

Are pets allowed in shared areas of the accommodation?

Your dog is welcome in your room and on the way in and out of the building. The shared kitchen, the dorms and the wellness spaces are off limits.

Are there dog parks near Drifter Christchurch?

Hagley Park, 15 minutes on foot, is the one most guests use. For a longer run, Bottle Lake Forest Park on the north-east side of the city is a designated dog exercise area, about 20 minutes by car.

Can pets be left unattended in rooms?

We’d ask that you don’t leave your pets unattended. A dog alone in an unfamiliar room usually barks, which carries to the rooms either side. If you’re out for a full day, book a dog sitter or doggy daycare before you arrive.

What kinds of pets can stay at Drifter Christchurch?

The rooms and the cleaning are set up for dogs only. If you’re travelling with a different animal, please contact us.

Can I bring more than one pet?

That depends on the room. Let us know how many dogs you’re bringing and we’ll find one with the space.

Are there any breed or size restrictions?

There’s no breed restriction. The private rooms vary in size, so just tell us how big your dog is and we’ll match you to one with enough room.

Where are the closest vets to Drifter Christchurch?

After Hours Vets at 146 Antigua Street, Addington is the nearest emergency option, open 7pm to 8am on weeknights and straight through weekends and public holidays. For daytime appointments, At The Vets at 406 Brougham Street, Sydenham runs Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm and Saturday mornings. Neither is open around the clock, so ask at reception if something comes up mid-afternoon.

Can I take my dog to the beach in Christchurch?

Some Christchurch beaches are Summer Beach Prohibition Areas, which means no dogs from 1 November to 31 March between 9am and 7pm. Outside those dates and hours they go back to being under-effective-control areas. Check the Christchurch City Council dog rules map to see which beaches are affected.
